My new favorite taco truck in Hongdae. But I don’t want to swagger-jack, thanks to Anthony and Tim for taking me. Much love.

10cm - Kingstar (스타킹). While UV is Current Obsession #1, 10cm has recently been giving them a run for their money. I can’t stop listening to this song! I really need to go buy their album today. Or maybe I’ll just go tomorrow and sit at Caffe Bene all day today. Life is so hard.

BTW: More of UV, one of my recent obsessions. This song has English subs for all my miguk friends. The slide part is the best.

You Know Namsan Tower?

First, watch the first 12 seconds of this video: (Or the whole thing, it’s f***ing amazing!)

Okay, so now you may understand the enormity of my adventure to the base of Namsan Tower, or “N Seoul Tower”. Though I’d been to Namsan Tower before, I hadn’t seen this video yet so did not keep repeating “You know Namsan Tower?” in my head the whole time. Basically, since I now knew of UV, this time was 10x more awesome.

Well, my journey began with my wishes to receive a visa to enter China being rejected. As I was rejected by multiple travel agencies and then again by the door guard at the Chinese consulate, I really needed a pick-me-up as I had just walked down the long hill from the CCP dream-crusher crying. It was definitely not the best way so spend your morning.

Luckily, I met up with my friends Sara, NaRhee, and Katie from USC afterwards and started to get over the whole ordeal with lunch from Bulgogi Brothers in Myeongdong. YUM!

Ahh, a nice relaxing lunch before the trek to the top of the mountain…… or not so much. The Dunkin Donuts in Myeongdong caught on fire and the whole place was in an uproar.

On the bright side, there was a Canmore shaved-ice shop conveniently on the second floor across the street so we got to sit in the AC and causally eat papbingsu while watching the mayhem unfold.

Poor Dunkin Donuts…….

Anyway, after all the excitement it was time to go to Namsan. I previously called it a trek but in actuality you take a cable car ala Boys Before Flowers. But the actual walking up to the cable car base station was a trek! I swear! (But this was mainly because I took us on a crazy route.)

And what is the first thing you think of when you reach the top of Namsan mountain? “I could really learn about Korean history through displays of teddy bears right about now!” Well, luckily for those who feel the craving, the Teddy Beat Museum is conveniently located at the base of N Seoul Tower. Sara went last year so cheaped out but NaRhee, Katie, and I forked over the 8,000 won and spent a good 40 minutes looking at teddy bears.

And my personal favorite:

They even had the Goong bears!

Me and my Shin Goon. :)

Anyway, going to the Teddy Bear Museum was actually just to waste some time because we wanted to make sure to stay up at Namsan until it got dark. The view and atmosphere are the way better at night.

On all the gates, they have these locks that couples will come and place on the railings to ensure that their love lasts forever… or something like that. Even if you’re single, like all of my girlfriends and I were, it’s still pretty cool to see. It is also the perfect symbol to represent the ridiculousness of Korean couple culture.

But the best part is the view. I really love Seoul.

Maybe next time I’ll come with a boy and place a lock. Or not. Coming with a bunch of girlfriends and making fun of all the couples I think is more fun. I actually don’t know what I would say if my boyfriend said “let’s go buy a love lock, write a cute message, and place in up at Namsan so our love will last forever.” Probably something along the lines of “we need to talk about that future you think is lasting forever.” Yes, definitely better to go with girlfriends.

Back in the Motherland - IPSELENTI Time!!!

So my first actual post after returning to the motherland! Even though i have been here less than two weeks so much had happened. I guess I’ll have to post a lot in the next couple of days to catch up. What to start with? Getting back into the swing of university life. Hells yeah.

So I was supposed to come to Korea the week after I did, but I arrived the 18th of May just to make sure that I here in time for IPSELENTI! What is IPSELENTI you ask? Korea University’s annual school festival and concert where famous Korean singers come to perform and everyone cheers their hearts out in the name of “KO-DAE!” (The Korean nickname for Korea university coming from the KO in Koryo and the DAE in Daehakyo. Koryo Daehakyo = Korea University in Korean.)

But, “cheering” you say? I am familiar with that! “We have song girls at USC! And we have the So-Cal Spell-out, right?” Not even close. Korean students take cheering to a whole new level. There are about 20 “university songs” (including choreographed moves) which are scream-sung at the top of everyone’s lungs from 4-11pm. Here is part of one of my favorite cheering songs:

And that is already 3 hours in! The songs are led by the Korea University Cheerleaders who I basically worship because I think they are so cool. They are co-ed group of hard-core cheering students who dress up in suits during the day and traditional Korean robes at night to lead the cheering. They have a ridiculous amount of energy and if only I was an actual Kodae student as opposed to an exchange student I think I would have fit right in. Again, they are frickin’ awesome.

Daytime*:

NIGHTTIME*:

They also have an incredible ability to do back-bends*:

I seriously love the KU cheerleaders and cannot fully express my love through words so I’ll move on…..

Last year’s IPSELENTI was so fun because I got to go with all my friends and thought most of them have either gone back to their respective home countries or are in the army, Sue, Yong-min, and I still got to represent IBC(C) and had a blast. (Of course with Mr. Malibu.)

It was all in all a good night, one of my favorite parts about Korea University. And I got to use my Korean cheering skills which I tried so hard to master last time! IPSELENTI seriously demonstrates why I love this country so much.

OMG I missed this country so much.
